Skardu Pakistan Travel Guide: Shangrila, Deosai Plateau, Khaplu Palace & Complete 6-Day Itinerary

The Gateway to Pakistan’s Giants

Skardu is the capital of Baltistan and the launchpad for expeditions to K2, Broad Peak, Nanga Parbat, and the Gasherbrums — some of the highest and most technically demanding mountains on earth. But you don’t need to be a climber to fall in love with Skardu. Its alpine lakes, cold desert dunes, ancient forts, and Balti culture make it one of Pakistan’s most rewarding destinations for regular travellers. In 2026, direct flights from Islamabad and improved roads have made Skardu more reachable than ever.

Best Time to Visit

  • April–June: Spring blooms and manageable weather (10–22°C). Deosai Plateau opens in June.
  • July–September: Peak trekking and expedition season. Long days, warm midday sun.
  • October: Autumn colours, cooler nights, fewer crowds.
  • November–March: Deep snow, road closures, only for winter photography enthusiasts.

Top Places to Visit in Skardu

1. Shangrila Resort & Lower Kachura Lake

Nicknamed the “Heaven on Earth.” An old aircraft-turned-restaurant sits on the shore. The still, blue lake with mountain reflections is Skardu’s most photographed spot.

2. Upper Kachura Lake

A short walk from Shangrila, quieter and more pristine. Boat rides available in summer.

3. Sheosar Lake & Deosai National Park

Deosai is the world’s second-highest plateau (4,114 m). Home to the endangered Himalayan brown bear, marmots, and wildflowers in July. Sheosar Lake sits in the middle — the drive itself is unforgettable.

4. Sadpara Lake & Sadpara Dam

Just 8 km from Skardu town. Excellent for a half-day picnic and sunset drive.

5. Kharpocho Fort

A 16th-century hilltop fort overlooking Skardu town and the Indus River. Steep 30-minute hike; the views justify every step.

6. Cold Desert (Katpana Desert)

Sand dunes at 2,226 m surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Unique in the world. Best visited at sunrise or sunset.

7. Basho Valley

Untouched pine forests, meadows, and streams — 3 hours from Skardu. Camping paradise in July–August.

8. Khaplu Palace & Valley

A 2-hour drive east. The restored 19th-century Khaplu Palace is now a heritage hotel. Peaceful valley with polo grounds and apricot orchards.

9. K2 Base Camp Trek

A 21-day trek starting at Askole village. Only for experienced trekkers with a certified operator. One of the world’s greatest trekking journeys.

How to Get to Skardu

By Air

PIA operates daily flights Islamabad ↔ Skardu (55 min). New Islamabad International Airport terminal makes this smooth. Book 3–4 weeks ahead for peak summer; flights fill fast and are weather-dependent.

By Road

Islamabad → Skardu via Karakoram Highway → Skardu Road: 24–30 hours. The final Skardu Road section (from Jaglot) is spectacular, following the Indus River through gorges. New road under construction cuts travel time significantly.

Where to Stay

  • Luxury: Serena Shigar Fort, Khaplu Palace (both restored heritage hotels)
  • Mid-range: Shangrila Resort, Concordia Motel Skardu, Byarsa Hotel
  • Budget: Hotel Mashabrum, PTDC Motel Skardu, guest houses from PKR 2,500/night
  • Boutique & scenic: Baltoro Hotel, K2 Motel Skardu (Indus River view)

What to Eat

  • Balti Mamtu: Meat-stuffed dumplings, a Baltistan specialty
  • Prapu & Kisir: Traditional buckwheat pancakes with apricot oil and walnut chutney
  • Khambir bread: Local sourdough eaten with butter and salt tea
  • Fresh trout: Farmed in local streams, grilled with lemon
  • Apricot everything: Fresh, dried, pressed into oil, made into juice, added to pilaf

Suggested 6-Day Skardu Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrive Skardu (fly from Islamabad) → check in → Kharpocho Fort at sunset
  • Day 2: Shangrila Resort → Lower & Upper Kachura Lakes → dinner at aeroplane restaurant
  • Day 3: Deosai Plateau day trip → Sheosar Lake → return by evening
  • Day 4: Katpana Cold Desert sunrise → drive to Khaplu → afternoon at Khaplu Palace
  • Day 5: Khaplu village walk → polo ground → return to Skardu → Sadpara Lake sunset
  • Day 6: Local bazaar → Shigar Fort visit → depart

Practical Tips

  • Deosai roads only open June to early October — check before planning
  • Foreigners no longer need NOC for Skardu, Shigar, or Khaplu as of 2024
  • K2 Base Camp and other extreme treks still require a licensed operator and permits
  • Carry warm clothes even in summer — Deosai nights drop below zero
  • Cash-only in most places; ATMs in Skardu town but limited
  • Altitude sickness is real above 3,500 m — ascend slowly, stay hydrated
  • SCOM SIM works best in remote areas

Final Word

Skardu doesn’t try to impress you. It just is — vast, ancient, and quietly humbling. You leave with more than photos; you leave with perspective.
